About Us

Theta's founders--Bettie Locke, Alice Allen, Hannah Fitch, and Bettie Tipton--were among the first women admitted to Indiana Asbury College (now DePauw University). They were relentlessly taunted and discriminated against by male students and faculty. In result, they founded the first Greek-letter fraternity known among women on January 27, 1870--Kappa Alpha Theta.

Creating a women's fraternity allowed them to learn, grow, support one another, and be part of something larger than themselves. The Zeta Theta chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta was established in 1989 at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Years later, we are proud to celebrate their legacy and continue to share their vision and their hope for Kappa Alpha Theta.

Our Values
Kappa Alpha Theta was founded on four values, which we refer to as the four points on our symbol--the kite.

•Intellectual Curiosity
•Leadership Potential
•Commitment to Service
•Personal Excellence
